ExploreLearning would like to issue a challenge to all Richmond, VA, and Anne Arundel County, MD, teachers. The more you and your students explore math and science with Gizmos and Reflex, the greater student understanding and achievement becomes.
Throughout this school year, ExploreLearning and Instructional Specialists will monitor teacher and student Gizmo and Reflex use to determine the teachers with the highest usage and student achievement to be recognized at a reception in the spring of 2016. In addition, the top Gizmo and Reflex schools will be recognized with a banner for their school to proudly display.
Get the year started off right and GET THE GREEN LIGHT!
Reflex is an adaptive and individualized online system which helps students of all ability levels to develop instant recall of their basic math facts. One of the keys to student success with Reflex is “Getting the Green Light.”
Reflex sessions are divided into three portions:
- Fluency check
- Coaching session
- Individualized practice with engaging games to work on making math facts automatic
It’s during the fluency games when the Green Light will come on. This signifies a “good workout” for the day. Getting the Green Light will open the store where students can “spend” their hard-earned tokens. They are also the key to opening locked games.
While shopping and unlocking games motivate the students, getting the Green Light is really the key to fluency progress. If students do not get to play the fluency games until the Green Light comes on, they aren’t getting the right amount of targeted practice that has been identified in the fluency check and coaching session.
Think about your own instruction. You wouldn’t give the students a pre-test, teach them a new concept, and then not give them ample time to practice that new concept. A student should get the Green Light within 15-20 minutes. If it’s taking longer, observe the student to see if he or she is jumping between games or getting off task. If time does not allow for the student to get to the Green Light, try to get the student logged on later in the day. If it’s very difficult to give up class time for Reflex, consider making Reflex a homework assignment, and require the students to get three Green Light days a week.
Going green will lead to math fact fluency and success in math!

October is Green Light Awareness Month!
Are your students regularly “Getting the Green Light” during a Reflex session? If not, they are missing out on the following…
- Math Fact Fluency Growth
- Milestones
- Unlocking new fluency games and the Reflex Store
A Reflex session consists of, in order: a fluency check, coaching session, and fluency development games. The Green Light comes on in the upper right hand corner during the fluency development games to signify that the student has achieved a “good fact fluency workout” for the day.
Tips for getting the Green Light…
- A Green Light should come on around 15-20 minutes into a Reflex Session. If not, observe students to see where they are getting slowed down.
- If time doesn’t allow to get the Green Light, students can log back in later in the day and continue to work toward the Green Light.
- Reflex is web-based so students can access Reflex outside of school. There is even an iPad App!
- Since getting the Green Light leads to more milestones, print out and celebrate classroom and individual milestones certificates.
Your challenge…
- Get your students using Reflex!
- Monitor your student’s usage and challenge them to get the Green Light!
- Have teachers and parents tweet photos of student’s Green Light using the hashtag #Reflexmath
- The top 3 Classrooms with the highest Green Light percentage during the month of October will win an ice cream party!
