Wouldn't it be nice to have our students still learning over the Holiday Break? Why not create a Gizmos Holiday Game that they can do from home for some added fun and learning while on vacation? Here is an example of one that is great for grades 3-5.
Holiday Break Gizmo Game
Steps/Information
1) Please open the https://www.explorelearning.com/ website and login.
2) Please open a word document, then click FILE and save as and name the word document Holiday Game and Your Name , then press SAVE.
- Ex: HolidayGameSaarah
3) When taking a picture of a Gizmo, press on the camera image. Then open your word document and press PASTE or press the Ctrl and V button at the same time on your key board
4) Make sure to save your word document after each day or your information will be lost.
Day One
Using Fraction Artist create a face and then using the camera tool paste the picture into a word document
Day Two
Using Pond Ecosystem, press play and use your fishing pole to catch as many fish as possible in one day (24 hours). What type of fish did you catch and how many did you catch? Check the box “no farms”. What type of fish did you catch that time and how many? Why do you think you got the results you did?
Day Three
Use Cannon Ball Clowns to find which is farther: New York City and Paris or Earth to the space station? What value did you find for each distance? What units did you use and why?
Day Four
Using the Graphing Skills Gizmo, create a pie chart that shows the percentages of pie preferences, then using the camera tool on the Gizmo paste your graph into a word document. Which pie do you prefer? Which percentage do you fall into?
Day Five
Create a Garden that is fenced in completely and that uses 43 squares of sod and unlimited number of fence. Using the camera tool paste a picture of your garden into a word document.
Day Six
Using the Inheritance Gizmo, create a baby that will look identical to its parents. What did you do to get this result? Using the camera tool take a picture of the family and paste it into a word document.
Day Seven
Using the Spin the Wheel Gizmo, choose 100 players. How many players did not win a prize? How many won a small prize? How many won a big prize? Do this three times and see if you get the same answer each time (don’t forget to clear between each spin of 100 players)? Why or why not did this occur?
Day Eight
Using the Ants on a Slant Gizmo determine how many ants it will take to move the almond up a 20cm stick with no friction? Using the same stick, how many ants would it take with friction? What if we changed the length of the stick to 25cm (grab the stick to move it forward or back)? What did you discover from your answers?
Day Nine
Using the Movie Reviewer Gizmo press the Random button and then the Balance radio button. What is the mean of the movie reviews? Explain how you determined your answer. Take a picture and paste it into your word document.
Day Ten
Plants and Snails Gizmo: How many plants do you need to keep all four snails alive in a test tube? What did you discover happens otherwise? Take a picture of your successful results and explain why other tests didn’t work.
